HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning)

Our Energy Systems Group can perform testing on just about anything that is involved with energy consumption in the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) world.  They can monitor and measure airflow, temperature, pressure, power and energy.  They are also able to perform field monitoring, data acquisition and performance evaluation of residential and commercial HVAC equipment.

Exova is the only test facility in North America that is accredited by the Home Ventilating Institute (HVI) for Certification and Verification Testing of Residential Heat Recovery (HRV) & Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERV).  A manufacturer will normally send a new HRV/ERV unit for certification testing, which determines the performance of the unit in accordance to the CSA C-439-00.  Upon completion of Certification testing a report is issued to the manufacturer who then submits this report to HVI. HVI intern will issue a sticker, which will be placed onto that specific model and the reported performance values are published into HVI’s Public Directory. Typically it requires 2-weeks to perform certification testing.  Other HRV/ERV testing includes "verification testing", where a random selection of units are purchased “off the shelf”, that were previously tested at Exova, to determine if the HRV/ERV meet the requirements of the published Certified values. The third and final testing of an HRV/ERV is the “Challenge Testing”. Although this type of testing is rare, a manufacturer can challenge another manufacturer, if they suspect that the unit does not perform according to the specified published values.

The Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning lab can also be rented out by manufacturers and perform tests in order to determine the optimum performance of their units.
